Myeongokheon Natural Garden |
---|
Myeongokheon looks like a paradise when the Indian lilacs bloom in late summer. At the 1km (0.6 mi.) mark in the road from the Goseo Intersection towards the Chanpyeong Exit, you can see a town. Take the road on the right and find the landmarks of Myeongjiwon and Myeongokheon. It is designated as a municipal memorial site. The name Myeongok means “the stream sounds like the striking of two gem stones together.” This garden is placed on a hillside looking north and is composed of an upper pond, a lower pond, and a pavilion. It has no boundaries and fences but still creates a cozy atmosphere. Oh Huido (1583-1623) renounced the world and build a small house here by himself. Later his son, Oh Myeongjung (1619-1655), had a pavilion built next to the stream of the house, planted Indian lilacs, and dubbed the place Myeongokheon. The Husan-ri ginko tree, to which King Injo tied the bridle of his horse when he visited Oh Huido, is a minute walk away from Myeongokheon.
