Naju was the southwestern center of administration and military affairs in the Joseon dynasty and thus has many historical sites such as the Geumseong-gwan Guest House, the Jeongsuru of a gate of the government office, and the Naju-eup stone fortress wall. Geumseong Mountain has the most popular trails among amateur climbers because it is close to downtown Naju and has gentle slopes. Jeongryeol Temple is the ancestral shrine of five patriots including Kim CheonIl, who served as the first general of the royal army in the war against the Japanese during the Joseon Dynasty of the late 16th century.
